I'm currently participating in an online exhibition hosted by the QLD chapter of the JMGA (Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia - JMGQ is the QLD group). The subject is "Show Us Your Pins" and since I haven't had an excuse to make a brooch in ages, I jumped at the chance to participate. Through this project I want to express my thoughts on the Covid-19 situation and how it has affected people's lives and, more specifically, mental health, as this subject has a very personal meaning. Isolation, loneliness, alienation, the fear of the crowds... these are the themes I want to touch on through my piece. I've decided to work in silver this time, trying to keep my design as clean as possible while still maintaining clear visuals that are easily identifiable; the cityscape, the horizon, the isolating room/space, a visual representation of the Corona virus itself, even the partial circular shape of the brooch is meant to represent a globe. All these elements (and others I'll be showing in the next post) are things that have been floating around in my head since the start of these strange and troubled times. More process photos to come in the next post (and as I work on the piece!). Stay safe out there! (cross posted - with alterations - from my Patreon page)
