Continuing on from the previous post, here's the next update on how my brooch is going. Here is the cut out base of the brooch. I had to be extra careful with some of those corners, trying to keep them as straight and neat as possible. Also, I only had the one plate so didn't want to mess it up! These are some of the components that will go on the back of the brooch; the hinge (the hollow tube in the background which will be cut in half) and the two squarish hook thingies in the front that will be the catches. I used some square chenier (hollow tube) I had floating around in my metal boxes from a previous piece, which I shaped using different burs. The small tree like structure in the front is my symbol for the COVID-19 Corona virus; it is essentially one of the small branching structures (called a "spike glycoprotein") that protrudes from the main spherical body of the virus, as depicted in media. This is the back of the brooch which I have hand textured (because I clearly hate myself) using a small tipped diamond bur as I don't have a sand blaster or other fancy texturing machine in my little workshop (yet!). Probably the most time consuming part of this make so far, I had to go over it twice to get the density and direction of texture I was after. I'll admit, even after some hand numbness, it was still a lot of fun to do lol. Surrounding, are all the other bits and bobs (excluding the pin) that will be assembled to make the finished piece. And here's the brooch with the back parts soldered on and everything re textured to match. I'm focusing quite a bit on the back for this brooch for two reasons, 1. it gives the final piece a much more finished, clean look and 2. part of the brief is to showcase the back of the brooch as well, including the pinning mechanism, so if it's going to be a feature I want it to look as nice as I can make it. :) And that's what I've got so far! Hopefully the next and final post will be of the finished brooch. Stay safe out there! (cross posted from my Patreon page)
